Teach For Nigeria (TFN), a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing education inequities by building a movement of leaders from diverse academic fields to teach in underserved communities as full-time teachers, has launched applications for its eighth cohort of fellows.

The Teach For Nigeria fellowship is a two-year paid commitment that mobilises fresh graduates and professionals as Fellows to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children. Fellows harness their leadership skills while designing solutions to address the everyday struggles of placement schools and communities.

Prior to their placement, each cohort participates in an intensive six-week pre-service training. The training exposes fellows to the organization’s theory of problem and change, its vision, mission, and core values. Fellows are also trained in 21st-century teaching pedagogy, leadership, and entrepreneurship while undergoing a community immersion experience.

In their classrooms, fellows not only have the opportunity to teach but also deepen their understanding of the challenges facing the education sector in Nigeria. They engage and work collectively with community stakeholders to change the trajectory of children in their placement communities. The fellowship goes beyond improving students’ literacy and numeracy skills; it offers fellows the chance to teach today and shape the future of countless children in low-income communities.

Since its inception, TFN has recruited, trained, and placed at least 1,500 exceptional young leaders in over 600 schools across Lagos, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo states. The organization has also impacted over 300,000 students and boasts a growing network of 835 alumni.

Teach For Nigeria is also part of the Teach for All Network, a growing group of locally-led, independent organizations in over 60 countries with the shared purpose of expanding educational opportunities for children worldwide.

Fellowship Benefits And Eligibility Criteria

The Teach For Nigeria 2024 Fellowship offers a wealth of benefits and requires specific eligibility criteria. Applicants must be Nigerian nationals aged between 18 and 35, have completed their NYSC service on or before July 2024, and hold a university degree with at least second-class honours. Accepted fellows will receive a gross monthly stipend of N94,990 for two years, including holidays.

Additionally, they will have the opportunity to pursue a Professional Diploma in Education program through a scholarship. Fellows will gain access to mentors and continuous professional development, enabling them to design and execute social change projects while benefiting from mentorship and networking opportunities with professionals across various industries.

Application Process

The Teach for Nigeria Fellowship selection process has multiple rounds of applications for each cohort. An applicant can apply only once for any cohort. The application involves essay writing, an aptitude test, a telephone interview, group assignment, and a physical assessment, including a mock teaching session. The 2024 fellowship application closes on March 29, with the application outcome and next steps communicated via email.

Speaking at the recruitment launch event, Folawe Omikunle, the Chief Executive Officer of Teach for Nigeria stated,

Fellows commit two years to transforming academic and non-academic outcomes for the children during the fellowship. After the two-year fellowship, they continue to unleash their leadership towards addressing the barriers and issues identified while in the fellowship

On the opportunities available for Fellows after the two-year program, Folawe noted,

A number of our alumni have now launched social enterprises, leading successful and growing social enterprises and social impact organizations. We also have some of them working in policy, while others transitioned into working with the government.

Odedeji Gbeminiyi Abisola, a TFN alumna and panelist at the recruitment launch, said,

I went to the Teach For Nigeria pre-service institute as Mrs. Odedeji but came back as a brand new teacher-leader. The fellowship changed the trajectory of my professional journey, helping me to see beyond the four walls of the classroom.

Speaking on the kind of support he received as a Fellow, Kazeem Adekunle Abdulrasak, an alumnus of the fellowship and one of the panelists stated,

The support I receive at Teach For Nigeria started even before I resumed in the classroom. Teach For Nigeria gave me the platform to become part of a community of committed people.

Olukoya Tititobiloluwa Praise, a Teach For Nigeria student, also recounted how her teacher uses video clips and charts to teach and how she learned politeness from her teacher.

In commemoration of the 2024 World Oral Health Day, Pepsodent, one of the prominent global toothpaste brands, has initiated a dental health campaign named “Talk to A Dentist” in collaboration with the Nigerian Dental Association.

The campaign aims to reach 10 million children by 2025, with its launch beginning in schools and communities across Lagos.

Speaking during a press conference to herald the commemoration of the 2024 World Oral Health Day, Marketing Head – Beauty & Well-Being and Personal Care, Unilever Nigeria, Oiza Gyang, expressed the campaign’s motive to promote good oral health hygiene among children, emphasizing Unilever’s commitment to combatting poor oral health care in Nigeria.

Gyang highlighted the link between oral care diseases and absenteeism among school pupils, underlining Pepsodent’s efforts to reverse this trend through targeted initiatives.

Globally, about 3.9 billion people suffer from one oral health condition or the other with tooth decay being the most prevalent oral disease. It has been established that children with poor oral health are more likely to suffer self-confidence and self-esteem issues.

These days, we have since realized that the highest cause of school absenteeism is as a result of oral diseases, she said.

In her welcome remarks, Category Manager, Oral Care at Unilever Nigeria, Eva Ogudu, outlined the campaign’s objectives to achieve zero cavities through consistent twice-daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste like Pepsodent and regular dental check-ups.

She emphasized the initiative’s broader goal of democratizing access to dental care, including free dental camps to eradicate oral diseases. Ogudu reflected on past successes, noting the significant impact of previous campaigns in reaching millions of children and providing essential dental health services to thousands of Nigerians.

She underscored the ongoing collaboration between Pepsodent and the Nigerian Dental Association in advancing oral health education and accessibility nationwide.

Pepsodent’s “Talk to a Dentist” campaign was launched three years ago in collaboration with The Nigerian Dental Association to promote oral health education by sensitizing Nigerians on the importance of visiting a dentist.

In 2022 alone, we were able to reach 1 million children. In 2023, we took the awareness campaign a notch higher as the brand, in collaboration with NDA, reached 2 million children. Besides, we also provided free dental health checks for 50,000 Nigerians.

In addition, we also reached 30 million Nigerians indirectly through the distribution of Pepsodent to various households, Ogudu said.

Also speaking, Head, Corporate Affairs and Sustainable Business, Unilever Nigeria, Godfrey Adejumoh, noted that the ‘Talk to a Dentist’ campaign embarked upon by Pepsodent remains one of the numerous initiatives outlined by Unilever Nigeria to improve people’s health, confidence and well-being.

Adejumoh reiterated the company’s commitment to using its business to become a force for good in society.

On his part, Personal Care, Research & Development Head, Unilever Africa, Uchenna Nwakamma, explained that the Pepsodent brand remains one of the preferred toothpaste for driving oral health care agenda because of its patented formulation.

In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian Dental Association, Dr. Tope Adeyemi, disclosed that about 90% of the world’s population are more likely to suffer from oral diseases in their lifetime.

Adeyemi stated that Nigerians must cultivate low cost preventive practices such as brushing of teeth twice daily with fluoride containing toothpaste, visitation of dentist as well as the adoption of healthy lifestyle to prevent common oral diseases.

While appreciating the longstanding partnership on the ‘Talk To Dentist’ programme, he commended Unilever Nigeria for their steadfast commitment and support towards the actualization of optimum oral health among Nigerians.

The Nigerian Dental Association is also celebrating the World Oral Health Day 2024 in conjunction with Unilever Nigeria by carrying out various oral health promotional activities nationwide.

These oral health promotional activities includes; visits to schools, religious centres and markets; outreaches (free dental check-up, S&P, GIC filings, simple extractions) to various communities; oral health awareness walks, educational programmes; advocacy visits and awareness through the mass media and social media channels etc, he said.


He urged the Federal Government to integrate oral health services into the primary health centres stating that doing so will reduce the burden of common preventable oral diseases as well as save costs for dental expenditure.

Currently, oral care services are mostly accessed as a secondary level of care in the NHIA. The NDA calls for preventive oral care services such as scaling and polishing of teeth, fluoride therapy, simple dental fillings, dentures and simple tooth extraction to be included in primary care of the NHIA, he added.

Lamenting the limited access to oral health care services in Nigeria especially in the rural areas, he stated that it was unfortunate that dentist to population ratio currently stands at 1:53,828 as against the recommended ratio of 1:5,000.

Also speaking, the Director of the Dentistry Division at the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Gloria Uzoigwe, acknowledged the government’s efforts to improve oral health policy, emphasizing ongoing initiatives to integrate oral health into primary healthcare.

She commended Unilever for its contribution to oral health awareness and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to dental care for all Nigerians.

Last week the internet raved over a new sound and talent that seemingly just arrived on the block. Desmond Momoh popularly known as “The Majeek”, released his first single of 2024, titled; “The Moon”.

This single represents a shift from the norm in the Nigerian music scene, as “The Majeek” gives Nigerian music lovers a taste of something different with his blend of Reggae, Dancehall & Afrobeats.

As fans and music lovers continue to embrace this new sound, one might be forgiven for thinking that “The Majeek” only just began his foray into music in 2024. However, his career began over a decade ago in Benin City, when “The Majeek” initially started as a music producer and rose to acclaim for his production credits on songs like ‘Peperempe’ by Klever Jay ft May D, ‘Gladiator’ by Sleezy E ft J Martins and for co-producing ‘E Ku Si Go’ for J. Martins.

The Majeek’s career as an artist really began to kick off in 2021. His single, Cool Me Down was so well received at the time it garnered “The Majeek” some recognition from the powers that be. He later got a cosign from Boomplay as they made him the spotlight artist of their ‘New Kid On The Block’ playlist.

His consistency & growth as an artist became more recognizable to industry insiders. His smooth blend of lyrical prowess with an RnB/Dancehall flavor and vocal versatility, gained him the opportunity to open for one of the top Afrobeat acts, Patoranking at The Big-Name Concert in Lagos and TPE II in Nigeria’s capital Abuja. This was all topped off, when “The Majeek” announced the release of his debut EP titled; “Pressure” in 2023.

This 6-track body of work packed a punch with different genres from Afrobeat to RnB and Dancehall that showed off The Majeek’s talent and versatility. The themes for the EP cut across passion, dominance, and consistency infused with his experience of the rollercoaster called life, seen through his lenses.

Again, this was warmly received by industry insiders, as well as The Majeek’s burgeoning fan base. His reward? “The Majeek”received a recording contract from Sony Music West-Africa at the tail end of 2023, making him one of the artists to look out for this year.

From all indicators, “The Majeek” represents a voice for a new sound crop within a fresh generation.

Country General Manager, ALX Nigeria, Ruby Igwe with Director, Partnerships, Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, Sherifat Balogun at the International Women’s Day celebration organized by ALX Nigeria in partnership with 9mobile, recently in Lagos.

During the event, female entrepreneurs pitched their business ideas for a shot at a business grant from telecom giant, 9mobile. ALX also used this opportunity to unveil the relaunch of ALX Ventures, its comprehensive Tech Startup program encompassing a Founder’s Academy, accelerator, and venture fund.

The celebration, which was held on March 2nd at the ALX Costain hub, Lagos, brought together a diverse group of aspiring female entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and supporters of women in tech. Attendees were treated to a series of inspiring pitches from female entrepreneurs, each highlighting their innovative ideas and entrepreneurial spirit.

One of the highlights of the event was the announcement of the business grant winners. Chisom Ukachukwu, ALX Salesforce Learner and winner of the ALX & 9mobile Pitch Your Business competition took home the grand prize of five hundred thousand Naira, Adediran Irebamiji, from ALX Founders Academy won three hundred thousand naira as the 1st runner up, while Winifred Nnamdi, ALX Data Science Learner, won a hundred thousand naira, as 2nd runner-up.

Uba Michael, Chief Executive Officer of UBACLE Group, an indigenous firm that has set in motion plans to contribute to the energy sector through a collaboration to begin the production of solar panels in Nigeria. UBACLE Group recently signed an agreement with Chinese company Cando Solar for the manufacturing and marketing of solar-powered products in Nigeria.

The future of Nigeria relies solely on its ability to invest in both quality infrastructure and human capital. That is why I represented my company, UBACLE Group, to discuss with the Managing Director of China First Highway Engineering Co. Ltd., CFHEC, Yan Jiafu, ways we can collaborate to build quality projects and work together to bridge the gap, Michael said.

In addition, he said the quality of infrastructure in a nation plays a vital role in determining the living standards and general welfare of its citizens, and that is why the partnership is important to him.

UBACLE Group also announced its collaboration with China Overseas Engineering Group (COVEC) and China Railway Group Corporation to bridge the gap in infrastructure.

If the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is to succeed, we need to bridge the infrastructure gap. It will be my way of contributing my quota to the development of our dear nation, Nigeria, Michael stated.

In August 2023, Uba Michael was said to have been listed among the 100 most notable peace icons in Africa.

One of the leading recruitment and HR solutions providers in Sub-Saharan Africa, Jobberman has launched its latest gender responsiveness campaign focused on elevating entrepreneurship and vocational training for young women in Kaduna, Kano, Adamawa, Ondo, Katsina, Bauchi, Delta, Ogun, Benue, Edo, Lagos, and Oyo states. The campaign, tagged ‘She’s More’, launched at a press conference in Lagos, is a female-focused social awareness initiative created to elevate vocational skill training among women and empower them in fields such as baking, tailoring, and cloth making.

 According to Jobberman, the goal of the campaign is to train over 558,000 young women in business management, vocational skills, soft skills, and financial literacy and to support about 204,000 of them to start their businesses and help them become employers of labour.

International Women’s Month is a strategic period for us to launch this initiative. It is a testament to our commitment to not only invest in women but to accelerate the economic independence and advancement of women in Nigeria. Our focus of vocational training is to fill the business structure and skills knowledge gap in that sector of the economy,” says Samantha Ifezulike, Head of HR Jobberman Nigeria and Lead Advisor, She’s More Initiative.

“The ‘She’s More’ initiative is designed to deliver targeted intervention programs based on insights gathered on the specific needs of each of our learning states,” she said further. Popular social media influencers Omotara Akanni and Titilope Adedeokun were among the guests present at the press conference launch event.

According to a 2023 report from the (NBS), women had a higher percentage of unemployment in Q3:2023. While women have a higher rate of informal employment and self-employment compared to men, they suffer significant challenges that impede growth, including a lack of proper business skills and knowledge, an improper business structure, and access to finance.

The She’s More Initiative, implemented by Jobberman Nigeria, is said to be a continuation of its ongoing partnership with the Mastercard Foundation’s Young Nigeria Works.

Inkblot Productions once again teams up with the talented actress and TV host Nancy Isime for the eagerly anticipated thriller Saving Onome, which debuts in cinemas on April 5, 2024.

The drama marks the actress’s first film project for 2024. It’s like paying with a handshake – smooth, fast, and convenient.

How does Mastercard contactless work?

Mastercard contactless solutions utilize Near-Field Communication (NFC), Radio Frequency or QR Codes. When you tap your contactless card or device at the checkout, the payment details are transmitted wirelessly to the Mastercard network. Businesses interested in utilizing Mastercard’s Tap on Phone feature only need to follow the following phases and steps:

Phase I – Onboarding:

  • Step 1 – Start with an NFC Android Device and download a dedicated Tap on Phone app via the app store.
  • Step 2 – Request set up from your bank and receive credentials.
  • Step 3 – Sign in with credentials.
  • Step 4 – Start transacting.

Phase II – Receiving Payments:

  • Step 1 – Log in to the app after successful signup and input the amount of the purchase made.
  • Step 2 – Select the card variant and tap the NFC-enabled card on the NFC antenna of the device.
Cardholders

For cardholders, all recently issued and future Mastercard cards are NFC-enabled, so no need to go through any onboarding process. All you need to do to make payments is to tap your NFC-enabled card on the mobile device, enter your card pin, elect account type i.e., savings or current, and wait for payment confirmation on the merchant’s device – provided they are contactless-enabled.

How close does the “tap” have to be to the checkout reader?

Who said being a friend was always easy? In a world where romantic relationships often take the spotlight, the significance of friendships can sometimes be overshadowed. Female friendships have long been undervalued and misrepresented in pop culture. For years, movies and the media have perpetuated stereotypes of women tearing each other down, reinforcing a narrative of competition rather than camaraderie. However, in recent years, there has been a shift. We have seen a surge of powerful portrayals of female friendships, showcasing their depth, resilience, and unwavering support.

Enter the Showmax Nigeria Original drama series, Flawsome, where we meet Ivie, Dolapo, Ramat, and Ifenyinwa—four dynamic women navigating life, love, and careers. The characters are played by Sharon Ooja, Enado Odigie, Ini Dima-Okojie, and Bisola Aiyeola, respectively. Their friendship is not without its challenges.

Like any relationship, they experience disagreements, misunderstandings, and moments of tension. In a recent episode, tensions boiled over between Ramat, Ivie, and Dolapo, leading to a confrontation that sparked discussions among viewers.

Produced by Tola Odunsi, Flawsome follows the lives of four dynamic and ambitious friends bound by the flawed yet unbreakable ties they share. All four ladies, with unique personal and professional challenges, write their own stories and become the main characters in their productions.

Ivie, the Fashion Designer

Ivie, played by Sharon Ooja, is a wide-eyed young woman who abandoned medicine and surgery for a career in fashion design with the hope of making it big. Ivie embodies the relentless pursuit of what one wants. She went through the motions working for an abusive boss who stole her ideas while also being with an emotionally abusive partner, yet she rose above all the challenges to begin a fast-rising fashion business after winning a fashion design contest.

Dolapo, the PR Expert

Move over Olivia Pope; Dolapo is here to take over. Enado Odigie plays the smart and career-driven woman, Dolapo, who continues to beat the odds as she steadily moves up the corporate ladder with the biggest clients in her portfolio.

Dolapo is the ultimate fixer. When she is not saving her client’s reputation, she ensures her friends are okay and fights their battles. Everyone wants and loves friends like Dolapo who are always ready to go to war for your sake.

Ifeyinwa, the Tech Sis


Women are pulling more into the world of tech and Ifeyinwa, played by Bisola Aiyeola, is a good example of how many great things women can do within that space.

Ifeyinwa is a hard-working heiress who spent all her life preparing to become the CEO of her father’s company after his demise, only to find out she isn’t her father’s chosen candidate. This does not pull Ifeyinwa back, as she continues to fight for what is rightfully hers while planning to begin her start-up company.

Ramat, the Advocate

Find you a fighter for justice, and Ramat will be there. Played by Ini Dima-Okojie, Ramat is a fighter and co-owner of an NGO she runs with her husband. She is passionate about fighting for women’s rights and helping women who have suffered abuse in one way or another.

Ramat’s life is not as perfect as she portrays it to her friends. Her seemingly perfect marriage, fairly affluent life, and great career are not without their holes. With an imminent threat to her life’s work due to her husband’s grave secret, Ramat remains strong for her girls and beliefs. Season 1 saw Ramat go undercover to get into a lounge, trying to nail its owner for women trafficking and prostitution. In season 2, she fights her ex, whom she believes to be abusive to his wife, only to help them find psychological help for postpartum depression.

Flawsome is a mirror of today’s society. It touches on real-life issues and how women can navigate them. Even with scars, women press on wiser and stronger.

The series celebrates womanhood and the resilience of women. It addresses issues such as child and woman trafficking and prostitution, gender-based violence, emotional abuse, intellectual property theft, alcoholism, mental health issues, depression resulting from the loss of a loved one, as well as various situations people grapple with.

The ladies experience their fair share of life battles and fight to stay afloat and sane. However, their unbreakable bond of friendship and sisterhood shows that nothing beats having your best girls and support team to help when things get tough.

Female friendships, like those in Flawsome, inspire us to be better—better friends, allies, and human beings. They remind us of the strength that comes from unity, solidarity, and mutual support. They challenge us to break free from societal norms and expectations, forging our paths and defining success on our terms.

As we celebrate International Women’s Month, we must reflect on the beauty of female friendships and also recognise their transformative power. They can inspire change, challenge injustice, and shape the world for the better. Every woman deserves to have her tribe—a group of friends who lift her, support her dreams, and celebrate her successes. Cooking With GameChangers made its debut at an exclusive mixer hosted at the prestigious Capital Club Lagos on Thursday, March 7th, 2024. In the presence of top executives, entrepreneurs, and culinary experts, the brand-new TV show format had its premiere.

Hosted by the charismatic Daniel Etim-Effiong alongside show creator Seyi Banigbe, “Cooking With GameChangers” also welcomed its esteemed judges, M.I Abaga, Kaffy, and Captain Toba Abifarin, who actively participated in the premiere’s exciting activities.

Guests arrived to drinks and Hors d’oeuvres as they mingled. The host after that asked for guests to interact with at least five people to memorise their full names and occupations for a chance to win a cash prize. Popular blogger, Tai, of Foodie in Lagos emerged as the winner of this challenge.

Show creator, Seyi Banigbe, who is a lawyer, media executive, and host of talk show, Binging with GameChangers, welcomed guests, introduced the new show and gave insight into how the new show was created and developed. She showered accolades on the show’s judges and host highlighting how each person performed phenomenally well during the filming of Cooking with GameChangers.

The judges participated in a fun meal-plating game where they were challenged to make the best plating with the jollof rice and vegetables provided. Guests had a lot of fun cheering the judges who were judged this time by leading food bloggers and chefs. Gina Ehikodi-Ojo of Geena Foodies and Spice chose Captain Toba’s plating as her favourite.

Guests proceeded to watch an episode of Cooking with GameChangers while they enjoyed a specially curated 2-course dinner. Notable culinary experts and influencers present were Chiamaka Nwakalor-Egemba, Tai of Foodie in Lagos, Abisodun of Meals with Abi, Grace Adepoju of Velvety Foods, Atinuke Obele of Teekayskitchen and many more.

The GM of LASODA(Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs), Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, was present alongside featured GameChangers such as the GM of LASWA(Lagos State Waterways Authority), Damilola Emmanuel, Segun Dada of CAPSA, Segun Bankole of Sovereign Trust Insurance, Ngozy-Ezeka-Atta of Jaga Beauty, Yemisi Obe of Grandios Pap amongst many others.

Cooking with GameChangers” is inspired by the talk show, “Binging With GameChangers”, which has been on national television for seven years and has a large audience.

Each episode of Cooking with GameChangers follows a day in the life of a top corporate executive and an accomplished entrepreneur who ends up in the Cooking with GameChangers kitchen for a cook-off to determine the “Ultimate GameChanger”. The cooking competition is supervised and judged by celebrity show host, Daniel Etim-Effiong, and judges M.I Abaga, Kaffy, and Captain Toba.

On February 29, 2024, The Pride initiative hosted phenomenal women such as Nabila Aguele, Kenechukwu Chukwu, Jacqueline Suowari, Adaeze Ossai, and Doosuur Tilley Gyado to launch the beginning of a new initiative, The Pride aimed at empowering young girls.

The launch-themed “Young Leaders Summit” included head girls and assistant head girls in private and public secondary schools in Abuja.

Hosted by journalist and media personality Adeola Ademokoya, the event began with an introduction to The Pride’s mission, vision, and purpose. Jennifer Okeke-Ojiudu, who spearheads the initiative, spoke on behalf of the Ojiudu Foundation about the foundation’s commitment to empowering young girls to become successful women in the future. The Initiative name draws its inspiration from the strength and majesty of a lion’s pride, as reflected in the foundation’s logo.

Her speech captivated and inspired the audience of young girls, their teachers, and the speakers. Sharing her journey to finding her path and becoming who she is today, Jennifer Okeke-Ojiudu’s passion and dedication to empowering young girls and debunking stereotypes about what women can achieve were palpable.

Adaeze Ossai, Internal Auditor at Niger Delta Power Holding, spoke at the launch of the Pride event on February 29, 2024, at The Cans Park, Abuja

 The first set of speakers, Adaeze Ossai, Internal Auditor at Niger Delta Power Holding, and Kenechukwu Chukwu, Community Manager at Jobtech Alliance, spoke on the importance of appreciating access and relationships. The girls were encouraged through the stories the speakers shared to ensure excellence in everything they do as well as committing to help others on their way up. Unable to attend, Dr Munirat Antoinette Lecky, founder of The Live Wire Project, expressed her commitment to empowering the girls by sending a video where she shared candid insights and personal lessons and addressed the need to protect themselves from societal pressures.

Be respectful and be excellent in everything you do. When people fall short, don’t be quick to pull them down. Let’s empower and help each other at all times.

Following a lunch break, the event continued with the second set of speakers, including Jacqueline Suowari, an internationally recognised artist; Doosuur Tilley Gyado, COO of SoMe Solutions; and Nabila Aguele, former Special Adviser, Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, who shared the incredible stories of how they had to push through the barriers and carve a path of success for themselves. Their stories shed light on the importance of diligence, grit, determination, and commitment on the path to success.

The young girls and teachers were given opportunities to ask the speakers questions. Every speaker inspired and empowered the girls with their responses and shared practical advice from their wealth of experience. The school teachers were encouraged to stay committed to raising the next generation of women leaders with dedication, love, and support.

To close off the event, Jennifer Okeke Ojiudu delivered a heartfelt closing remark, expressing gratitude to all speakers, teachers, and young girls for their participation and support of the launch of The Pride. With a renewed sense of inspiration and empowerment, guests embraced the opportunity to network and make meaningful connections.

With the success of the launch of The Pride, it’s evident that this incredible event has left an indelible mark on all who attended. Joyce’s journey into sustainable construction began with a childhood fascination for buildings, nurtured by her father’s thoughtful gifts and visits to construction sites. However, it was a moment of crisis when her community faced displacement due to floods that ignited her commitment to sustainable construction. This pivotal event set her on a path to pursue civil engineering, blending her passion for construction with a drive for positive change.

Transformative Projects and Advocacies:

Through projects like the EDEN Garden City Project (EDEN GCP), Joyce has pioneered strategies to promote sustainable living and environmental consciousness. Her efforts have impacted countless lives, from advocating for eco-friendly materials in infrastructure development to enlightening communities on sustainable waste management practices. From 2016 to the present, the EDEN GCP has positively impacted over 500,000 listeners on-air and facilitated waste management training to curb indiscriminate dumping of waste on roadways.

Hands-On Experience and Leadership:

With a wealth of experience in construction project management and quality control, Joyce has actively engaged with both the private sector and professional associations to address critical industry issues. Before embarking on her graduate studies, she worked as a consultant project manager for Faultless Finish Limited, overseeing the construction of a 37-unit residential apartment for a renowned real estate company in Nigeria.

Additionally, she worked as a quality control inspector for the Saipem Egina Jetty Project in Port Harcourt, Rivers State under Trevi Foundations Limited and many more. Over the last seven years, she has focused her construction project management practice on sustainable construction projects, directly interfacing with private sector players and participating in professional association programs.

Global Outreach and Community Service

Joyce’s impact extends beyond construction sites, as evidenced by her volunteer work with organizations like the Associated General Contracts of America California, Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley and the Climate Reality Project.

Her dedication to community service, from volunteering for the Grab a Brush and Color a Life painting project that revamped six classroom blocks of Aromire Primary School, Mushin, Lagos State Nigeria, to distributing over four hundred sustainability educational materials and training high school students in building maintenance skills, demonstrates her unwavering commitment to societal upliftment. Furthermore, from 2016 to date, she has enlightened over 3500 African high school students from coastal communities about environmental sustainability and how they could incorporate it into their daily lifestyles.

Recognition and Future Aspirations

Joyce’s contributions have not gone unnoticed, earning her prestigious awards such as the Nigerian-American Partnership Award by the United States Consulate Lagos, Nigeria, the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, the Port Harcourt Chapter Chairman’s Award, Outstanding Civil Engineering Student Award, and scholarships from the Construction Management Association of America and, other esteem organizations.

As she pursues her master’s degree with a focus on Construction Management at San Jose State University in California, USA, Joyce aims to continue championing eco-friendly projects. Her goal is to specialize in sustainable building construction, the construction of emergency health centres, and low-cost housing units for families that are victims of natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, fire outbreaks, and more.

She also aspires to further her career to a PhD level in the future, developing outstanding research beneficial to the construction industry and mentoring the next generation of high school students interested in pursuing construction management/engineering programs.Her commitment to giving back to the next generation of construction professionals is truly unmatched.

The Federal Government has rolled out the Presidential Conditional Grant Scheme (PCGS) to empower Nano businesses as part of the Presidential Palliative Program.

Beginning on March 9, 2024, the scheme offers financial grants, without repayment obligations, to eligible small business owners operating in various sectors such as trading, food services, ICT, transportation, creatives, and artisans. The PCGS targets 70% women and youth, 10% people with disabilities, and 5% senior citizens, with the remaining 15% distributed to other demographics.

By focusing on the often overlooked group of business owners, the program seeks to unlock the potential of Nigeria’s burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystem and drive sustainable economic development at the grassroots level.

The N50,000.00 (Fifty Thousand Naira) grant per beneficiary, paid directly to their accounts, aims to reach one million small businesses across the 774 local government areas (LGAs) and the six council areas in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). With a target of 1,000,000 beneficiaries in each LGA and the FCT, the program has the potential to significantly impact communities nationwide.

Beneficiaries of the initiative have been selected through a rigorous process that includes the verification of each business owner through their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN).

The successful applicants met specific criteria, including owning a small business with progressive economic potential, a willingness to grow, and engage at least one additional staff member when necessary. Applicants also provided proof of residential/business address and relevant personal and bank account information before the December 18, 2023 deadline.

The initiative is implemented by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment with the Bank of Industry as the Executing Agency.

More than 90 prominent women leaders, representing both Francophone and Anglophone Africa, converged for the first-ever Business Women in Africa Lunch. The event, held on February 28, 2024, at the Art Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria, fostered connections and empowered women across linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Organized by the Francophone Africa Business Summit (FABS), the purpose of this side event was to network, with women industry leaders and business owners representing Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Mauritania, and Nigeria respectively.

These business leaders assembled to forge bonds across common borders. More than a gathering, the event was a watershed moment, giving rise to meaningful partnerships, business synergies, and lasting relations – the foundation driving pan-African prosperity.

In her opening speech, Managing Partner at Epena Law, Johanna Monthé, said

I really want you to leave this place having met at least 10 people. For those who haven’t met the francophone crowd, we have an amazing group of strong women coming from the DRC.

During her speech, the Managing Director of BGR Consulting, Habibah Waziri, noted that the lunch program is a welcome idea as it would help African women forge bonds across common borders.

She urged women to embrace their similarities, saying,

I understand the importance of one Africa even though we haven’t gotten there yet. There is a different perspective in this room; we have Francophone and Anglophone speakers, and if you break it down, we have at least ten to fifteen countries represented here.

It is important that we see more of our similarities than our differences, but one conversation will help you whether it’s agro, consulting, finance, mining, oil and gas, or whatever the case is, these are the kind of rooms that we all have to start with.

Fired up by the event, the women carried a torch of renewed commitment – to collaborate across borders and industries for a greater impact.

On Friday, February 23, a select number of guests were hosted by The Macallan as it unveiled its oldest single malt whisky, The Reach. First crafted in 1940, The Reach reflects an extraordinary moment in time and exemplifies the enduring spirit that has been at the heart of the brand for almost 200 years.

So, you understand that it was an event for the history books of Nigeria and the continent. Again, no one does better than we do when it comes to marking history.

The Macallan The Reach

Here is why the night was so special: boasting an extraordinarily rare 81-year history, The Reach is a discernible masterpiece that is expected to delight Nigerian whisky connoisseurs. It’s crafted from a single, sherry-seasoned oak cask, and the dark and precious whisky finds its home in a Lalique crystal decanter (oh, there are stunning photos below).

With only 288 decanters available worldwide, The Macallan’s launch of The Reach in Nigeria emphasises its dedication to consistently delivering exceptional whisky experiences for connoisseurs in the country.

Additionally, the cost of essential women’s services and healthcare continues to surge. To address this issue and mitigate the impact of the present reality on women and girls, it is crucial to empower more females with the knowledge, skills, and resources they require to succeed.

Youth of Enterprise (YOE), an initiative of EnterpriseNGR aimed at democratising access to quality employment opportunities for young Nigerians, is investing in women to accelerate the country’s long-term economic growth and financial stability to achieve a better future for everyone.

It aims to unite women to pave the way for a future where all women have opportunities to thrive. The concept of inclusion also involves an actionable commitment that enriches our communities, workplaces, and societies.

The campaign theme underscores the crucial role of inclusion in achieving gender equality, calling for action to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create environments where all women are valued and respected. “Inspire Inclusion” encourages everyone to recognize the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life, including those in the Nigerian Event Industry, which has contributed significantly to the Nigerian Economy.

2. Funke Bucknor-Obruthe Founder, Zapphaire Events

Funke Bucknor-Obruthe, the dancing event planner and CEO of Zapphaire Events, is also the author of The Essential Bridal Handbook and the mind behind Funke Says. Her company, Zapphaire Events, stands as one of Nigeria’s foremost event planning and management firms, earning accolades for innovative approaches in events for clients like Coca-Cola HBC, Samsung Electronics, and Google.

With over two decades of experience, Funke has garnered awards for her dedication and creativity. As a pioneer in Nigeria’s event industry, she attributes her success to self-belief, courage, hard work, and focus. The spirit of excellence propels her to continual achievement, serving as an inspiration to women globally. She is also the convener of the Event Experience Africa (TEXA), an annual conference fostering education and collaboration among professionals in the African Event industry for sustainable businesses.

3. Ibidunni Ighodalo Founder, Elizabeth R Events

The late Ibdunni Ighodalo was a renowned event management expert and co-pastor of Trinity House Church. She founded Elizabeth R and the Ibidunni Ighodalo Foundation, supporting families with infertility challenges. Known for her legendary event management skills, her company, even after her passing, continues to provide comprehensive services, including The Dorchester, a 3000-capacity event hall in Lagos.

Through her foundation, Ibdunni Ighodalo funded IVF treatments, bringing joy to families and preserving marriages. She passed away in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on June 14, 2020. May her soul continue to rest in peace. Amen.

4. Omolara Akinosho-Akande CEO, Just Weddings/JW Events

Omolara Akinosho-Akande, CEO of Just Weddings/JW Events, is a pioneer in the Nigerian Event Industry. Starting Just Weddings in 1999, she quickly transformed it into a trusted name for dream events in Nigeria.

Known for creating chic, elegant, and fun events, JW Events is hailed as the “WOW” factor company in full-service wedding planning and unique event designing. Omolara is also the Founder of the Association of Professional Party Organizers and Event Managers in Nigeria (APPOEMN).

5. Gbemisola Ope, CEO, Omega Events Company

Gbemisola Ope, an Events Professional with over 17 years of experience, excels in Events Management, PR, Human Resources, Customer Relations, Budget Event Design/Concept, and Procurement. Her expertise spans weddings, seminars, end-of-year parties, and product launches for top individuals and corporate organizations in Lagos.

Gbemisola’s career started with Adex Advertising (Chicago, Illinois) as a Public Relations Associate, followed by roles at First Data Corporation (Houston, Texas) and Trafalgar Energy Holding LLC (Houston, Texas). She then moved to the United Kingdom to work with City & Guilds (London) before establishing Omega Events in Nigeria, where she currently leads her team. She also serves as a Board Member of APPOEMN.

6. Olufunbi Akinsoye, CEO Dunamis Events

Olufunbi Akinsoye, CEO of Dunamis Events, has been orchestrating seamless events since 2000, accumulating over 20 years of industry experience. Her unwavering passion and dedication to enhancing the event sector’s growth are immeasurable.

International Women’s Month is a time to celebrate and recognize women’s achievements, resilience, and contributions across Nigeria and Africa, particularly those who have been lending their voices in the film industry to tell stories that matter to us.

Female creators have made great strides in shaping the creative industry, and Netflix is shining the spotlight on their remarkable contributions both onscreen and behind the scenes, propelling the film industry to global heights.
Leading female film producers, directors, actors and members of the Nigerian film community came together in Lagos, Nigeria for the ‘Her Voice, Our Story’ International Women’s Day event in collaboration with Mo Abudu of EbonyLife TV to celebrate the unique perspectives and remarkable stories of African women in the creative industry.

Speakers in the discussion including Netflix Director of Content in Africa Dorothy Ghettuba alongside Bolanle Austen-Peters (Man of God), Hamisha Daryani Ahuja (Namaste Wahala), Chichi Nworah (Shanty Town), and Peace Hyde (Young Famous & African) discussed their experiences as women in the creative industry and their efforts to portray strong, real-life female characters.

We are happy to work with the female powerhouse in the creative industry and bring to life the awesome projects that reflect their stories and promote our culture,” said Dorothy Ghettuba, Netflix’s Director of Content in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This event, aimed at celebrating and honouring inspiring women both in front of and behind the camera, and the diverse storytelling by and about women, heralds an exciting and diverse slate of upcoming films and series.

The upcoming lineup of female-led Nigerian stories spans various genres and themes in new local films and series from Mo Abudu, Bolanle Austen-Peters, Kemi Adetiba, Chichi Nworah, and Hamisha Daryani Ahuja, set to launch on the service in 2024:

  • Òlòtūré: The Journey (series) – Working undercover as a sex worker in Nigeria, a young journalist out to expose corruption fights for her life as she forges a path to Europe.

Fan-favourite reality series Young Famous and African will also be returning for its third season later this year while the girls of Parkhurst High School returned for their fourth season of School & mayhem on Blood and Water.

On February 19, 2024, Knorr, a trusted name in Nigerian kitchens marked ‘World Eat for Good Day’ by sparking a movement inspiring people to change the world, one plate at a time.

Knorr hosted a launch event in Lagos, unveiling their ‘Eativist’ initiative. This group of 14 individuals are dedicated to promoting veggie-forward meals that benefit both personal health and the environment, inspiring a ripple effect throughout the community.

The highlight of the occasion was the launch of a film featuring personalities such as Tobi Bakre, Taymesan, Anu Bakre, Mory Coco, Kaylah Oniwo, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Nancy Umeh, Chef Derin, Chef Cupid, Chef Roux, Diary of a Kitchen Lover, Zeelicious Foods, Chef Fregz, and Dr. Robert, all unveiled as Eativists. The Moveit Walkathon, kicked off from The Palms Mall in Lekki and winded through the vibrant streets of Victoria Island before returning to its starting point for a fun-packed finale.

The event, spanning a distance of 6 kilometres, was not just a celebration of health and fitness but also a testament to the strength, resilience, and empowerment of women across the globe.

Speaking on the partnerships with the leading women associations, Ayodeji Bankole-Olusina, Chief Growth Officer of BettahLife Living Benefits, said,

The Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy has announced the official launch of #ECOnomyLagos, a groundbreaking platform aimed at addressing the pressing challenges of climate change through strategic economic development initiatives in Lagos.

Led by Titilayo Oshodi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, the launch event heralded a new era of sustainable growth and innovation.

Titilayo Oshodi underscored the urgent need to harness the economic potential inherent in the circular economy, emphasising its capacity to generate employment, boost government revenue, and mitigate carbon emissions in Lagos. According to her, the statistics regarding the threats of climate change in Lagos are worrisome, but she added that on the flip side, there are economic opportunities worth more than 2.7 billion dollars.

The event, themed ‘The ECOnomy of Lagos: Opportunities, Challenges, and Unlocking Strategies, drew stakeholders from across the sectors to view the challenges of climate change from an economic lens and devise ways to grow more businesses that will rely on waste as production raw materials.

  • Honourable Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, who served as the Chief Host

Furthermore, the event was honoured by the presence of esteemed traditional rulers, including the ONIBA of IBA, the Onigbogbo of Igbogbo, and the Oloja of Epe, underscoring the importance of community engagement and traditional leadership in sustainable development efforts.

The active participation of sustainability teams from prominent financial institutions such as FCMB and Sterling Bank further highlighted the growing recognition within the private sector of the role they play in driving sustainable business practices.

The launch of #ECOnomyLagos marks a significant milestone in Lagos’ quest for sustainability and economic resilience. As the initiative gains momentum, it is poised to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and catalyse transformative change towards a greener, more prosperous future for all Lagosians.
