Doing Life With… is a BellaNaija Features series that showcases how people live, work, travel, care for their families and everything in between. We are documenting the lives of all people and ensuring everyone is well-represented at BN.

Did you miss last week’s conversation with Haoma Worgwu? You can catch up here.

This week, we’re doing life with Benedicte Kalala, a lifestyle and food content creator. Enjoy the conversation.

Hey Benedicte, how do you do?

I am doing well. I hope you are too.

We feel good, too. Give us a peep into your background and what part of your childhood formed who you are today

I was born and raised in Congo DRC and am one of 6. I remember having a fun childhood, playing with siblings, cousins and neighbours. My mother is and has always been a no-nonsense woman and I think that’s something I picked up on during my development. We grew up not having much and moved around a bit until we found our way to the US. Here, I finished high school, graduated from college, and started my own business. In all that, I noticed the differences and similarities in lifestyle among my peers and me. This would later influence a lot of my decisions, thoughts, and lifestyle values.

That’s so cool, Benedicte. Walk us through your content creation journey

I started creating content in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. I was home like the rest of us and was a vegan at the time, so I started recording what I ate and the exercises I did (to avoid coming out of the pandemic twice the size I went into it). In my mind, I was going to be the next Tabitha Brown; the only problem was, that veganism was never a long-term goal. It was a change I had to make to manage some health concerns. Once that was settled, I didn’t find much joy in creating content I was no longer fully living by 100%, so I stopped and reset. I changed all my social media names from Dab Fittness to Benny’s Take to allow me to incorporate all that I cared to talk about. Eventually, I found the courage to start saying how I really felt about things and people gravitated towards that authenticity. I love that I get to be myself at all times and don’t have to send a representative of myself. I show up every day to show people, particularly women, that they don’t have to have exceptional talents or skills to be valuable. Their everyday thoughts, selves, and nuances are enough to command respect.

How long does the process of content creation take, from ideating to publishing?

There’s no set time for all kinds of content and it all depends on what is being created. Longer format content (YouTube videos) naturally takes more time because I shoot in 4k and the files tend to be larger. This ultimately means longer editing/processing time. A lot of my reactions take no more than ten minutes between thinking about what I want to say, recording it, and publishing it. A lot of the videos I react to are non-consequential so there’s not much thought or research that goes into it. For YouTube, however (depending on the topic) I make sure that I’m well versed to ensure that I’m not using my platform to spread misinformation.

You have a diverse background and identity, tell us about this

I grew up with a wide range of cultures around me and consumed a lot of media from other cultures. We watched a lot of Nigerian movies, a lot of Tanzanian theatre as well as other shoes from Cote D’Ivoire. I also lived in Zimbabwe for a bit and so my accent just took a body of its own.

Tell us about life beyond content creation

Well, I own my own cleaning company that funds my life. I also co-own a luxury picnic business with my sister that is growing slowly but surely. I’ve been hired to cater for events because food is always a passion of mine.

Multiple income flex, eh?

You can say.

What’s a major challenge you have experienced in your career so far?

A major challenge I’ve faced is imposter syndrome. I sometimes feel as though I don’t deserve to be in spaces that I’m in and I often have to surrender that to God and walk in His power.

Tell us what a typical day in your life is like

I’m an early bird who likes to get things done sooner rather than later and I often start by getting some cleaning out of the way. While warming up my car, I will either record or edit a video already in my draft. On a good day, I’d eat breakfast, work out, and read my Bible but that doesn’t always happen as consistently as I’d like it to. While cleaning, I’ll listen to my favourite podcasts or catch preaching. After cleaning, I typically come home, eat something and prep dinner. I end my nights eating dinner and spending time with my husband.

What are the little things you do to spark joy during tough times?

I am an aunt of 4 and when I need a bit of a break, I hang out with my nieces and nephews. Children in general remind me that most things are never as serious as they may seem in my mind at the moment. I also just pray and spend intentional time with God. When I feel overwhelmed, it’s usually a result of me not spending enough time with God.

You like fashion a lot. Do you think fashion influences human personality?

I think fashion tells our stories in general. I find that the status of my mind on any given day reflects how I dress. For example, on days I feel the happiest, I dress the best and on days I don’t, there’s not much effort. All in all, I believe people need to dress how they see fit regardless of how others may feel.

If you were only allowed to do one thing for a whole month, what would it be?

This is a tough question because I like so many things. If I had to choose though, I’d only cook for a month. There are so many foods I’d love to try making and if I had a month to do only that, I think I’d accomplish so much. Wait, does eating count as a separate thing? 🤣

Tell us about your hobbies and things you do to pass away time

I like all sorts of things and it all depends on my mood. I love listening to music, playing my keyboard, making cocktails, and sometimes reading (depending on the book).

Interesting. Thank you for being on Doing Life With…, Benedicte

Thank you for having me.

In the vast world of hair care, few brands can claim a journey as remarkable as El’Rog. Founded by the visionary entrepreneur Elsie Rogers, this UK-approved natural unisex hair growth and hair care products company has gone from humble beginnings to become a renowned global brand.

Elsie’s inspiration for Unisex Hair Growth was sparked during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a woman going through menopause, she found herself battling with not just hormonal changes, but the stress of lockdown and homeschooling two sons one with Autism and the other preparing for A’Level exams. As she saw her once beautiful hair thinning, she embarked on a quest to find a solution.

This led Elsie to delve into a two-year extensive research on the benefits of natural plants and oils for damaged hair and dry scalp and discovered natural products across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Oceania. Combining her findings with her passion for creating effective solutions, Elsie began experimenting with formulations in her kitchen.

With the help of her intelligent son, Christian, the birth of Opal – a revolutionary unisex hair growth serum – marked the turning point for El’Rog. It is UK cosmetic-approved and uniquely formulated with 14 natural products such as black rice, green tea and rosemary.

Not stopping at hair care alone, Elsie recognized the neglected realm of beard care. Observing that many men failed to give their beards the attention they deserved, El’Rog extended their range to include products like the popular Citrine men’s beard growth and moisturising oil, which is also UK cosmetic-approved.

Today, El’Rog’s products have found their way into Amazon’s FBA in the UK and will be across Europe and Africa by the summer of 2024. Products can be shipped to Africa via her website. With a commitment to creating natural and effective solutions, El’Rog has become a trusted name for individuals seeking to rejuvenate their hair and unleash their full potential.

Beyond her success with El’Rog, Elsie’s professional background brings immense credibility to her brand. With over 25 years of experience in business change and transformation, she has led high-profile projects across various industries, spanning banking, finance, insurance, retail, payment card, and government sectors.

Elsie Rogers’ journey from personal struggle to global hair care success exemplifies the power of persistence, insight, and the determination to create products that truly make a difference. As El’Rog continues to expand its reach, it is clear that Elsie’s passion and transformative vision will remain at the heart of this exceptional brand.

Finally, to forge stronger ties with our customers who may face import expenses, we are eager to extend our affiliate programme to Africa, specifically Nigeria. We are elated to welcome individuals who wish to partake in this opportunity and engage with our brand, while also mitigating any potential financial hardships associated with import fees.

Teach For Nigeria (TFN), a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing education inequities by building a movement of leaders from diverse academic fields to teach in underserved communities as full-time teachers, has launched applications for its eighth cohort of fellows.

The Teach For Nigeria fellowship is a two-year paid commitment that mobilises fresh graduates and professionals as Fellows to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children. Fellows harness their leadership skills while designing solutions to address the everyday struggles of placement schools and communities.

Prior to their placement, each cohort participates in an intensive six-week pre-service training. The training exposes fellows to the organization’s theory of problem and change, its vision, mission, and core values. Fellows are also trained in 21st-century teaching pedagogy, leadership, and entrepreneurship while undergoing a community immersion experience.

In their classrooms, fellows not only have the opportunity to teach but also deepen their understanding of the challenges facing the education sector in Nigeria. They engage and work collectively with community stakeholders to change the trajectory of children in their placement communities. The fellowship goes beyond improving students’ literacy and numeracy skills; it offers fellows the chance to teach today and shape the future of countless children in low-income communities.

Since its inception, TFN has recruited, trained, and placed at least 1,500 exceptional young leaders in over 600 schools across Lagos, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo states. The organization has also impacted over 300,000 students and boasts a growing network of 835 alumni.

Teach For Nigeria is also part of the Teach for All Network, a growing group of locally-led, independent organizations in over 60 countries with the shared purpose of expanding educational opportunities for children worldwide.

Fellowship Benefits And Eligibility Criteria

The Teach For Nigeria 2024 Fellowship offers a wealth of benefits and requires specific eligibility criteria. Applicants must be Nigerian nationals aged between 18 and 35, have completed their NYSC service on or before July 2024, and hold a university degree with at least second-class honours. Accepted fellows will receive a gross monthly stipend of N94,990 for two years, including holidays.

Additionally, they will have the opportunity to pursue a Professional Diploma in Education program through a scholarship. Fellows will gain access to mentors and continuous professional development, enabling them to design and execute social change projects while benefiting from mentorship and networking opportunities with professionals across various industries.

Application Process

The Teach for Nigeria Fellowship selection process has multiple rounds of applications for each cohort. An applicant can apply only once for any cohort. The application involves essay writing, an aptitude test, a telephone interview, group assignment, and a physical assessment, including a mock teaching session. The 2024 fellowship application closes on March 29, with the application outcome and next steps communicated via email.

How to Apply

You can apply for the Teach for Nigeria Fellowship here

The TFN Fellowship Experience

Speaking at the recruitment launch event, Folawe Omikunle, the Chief Executive Officer of Teach for Nigeria stated,

Fellows commit two years to transforming academic and non-academic outcomes for the children during the fellowship. After the two-year fellowship, they continue to unleash their leadership towards addressing the barriers and issues identified while in the fellowship

On the opportunities available for Fellows after the two-year program, Folawe noted,

A number of our alumni have now launched social enterprises, leading successful and growing social enterprises and social impact organizations. We also have some of them working in policy, while others transitioned into working with the government.

Odedeji Gbeminiyi Abisola, a TFN alumna and panelist at the recruitment launch, said,

I went to the Teach For Nigeria pre-service institute as Mrs. Odedeji but came back as a brand new teacher-leader. The fellowship changed the trajectory of my professional journey, helping me to see beyond the four walls of the classroom.

Speaking on the kind of support he received as a Fellow, Kazeem Adekunle Abdulrasak, an alumnus of the fellowship and one of the panelists stated,

The support I receive at Teach For Nigeria started even before I resumed in the classroom. Teach For Nigeria gave me the platform to become part of a community of committed people.

Olukoya Tititobiloluwa Praise, a Teach For Nigeria student, also recounted how her teacher uses video clips and charts to teach and how she learned politeness from her teacher.

The theme of this year’s fellowship is “Teach Today, Shape Tomorrow: Your Leadership Matters Now!” targeting young leaders committed to tackling the country’s most difficult challenges and unleashing the potential of all Nigerian children. Oluchi Amajuoyi

Adanna takes centre stage in the Showmax Nigeria original series, Cheta’M. As the eldest daughter of a council member and second in command among the Umuade women, she is depicted as the courageous protagonist. Oluchi Amajuoyi embodies the role of Adanna so well, capturing the innocence and naivety expected of a maiden of her age and time.

“Wearing the shoes of Adanna was indeed empowering, I felt stretched mentally and physically. Portraying her ability to fight for something so abstract sheds more light on how resilient the mind of a focused woman can be,” Oluchi says in an exclusive interview with BellaNaija.

In the series, she stars alongside an impressive mix of upcoming acts and Nollywood OGs, including Ruby Okezie, Kalu Ikeagwu, and Nonso Odogwu.

For International Women’s Month, we caught up with Oluchi to discuss her role in “Cheta’M,” a series that revolves around Adanna and Nnanna, who share a once-in-a-lifetime kind of love and fight against all odds to stay together. In this interview, she talks about the women who inspire her and her perspective on the significance of International Women’s Month. Plus, she reveals the first song that’ll make her “Strong Women” playlist for this month.

***

Hi Oluchi, What were you up to on International Women’s Day?

Nothing too busy. I was just creating memories with the wonderful women God put in my life.

You play the role of Adanna in Cheta M. It is admirable how she embodies empowered female characters, especially as the courageous protagonist and second in command among the Umuada women. What was it like to step into her shoes?

Adanna is courageous indeed. However, I believe her courage stems from watching her mother who is the second in command among the Umuada and other brave women in Mgberi, and also picking subtle lessons on how to stand for what she believes to be right. Wearing the shoes of Adanna was indeed empowering, I felt stretched mentally and physically. Portraying her ability to fight for something so abstract sheds more light on how resilient the mind of a focused woman can be.

The theme of International Women’s Day is Investing in Women: Accelerate Progress. It’s about supporting women to reach their full potential. What does that mean to you?

This is rejuvenating. In a nutshell, I call it “Hope.” Finally, the true essence and influence of a woman is that she has the hope to reach her full potential. Women are unique and special by design. Projecting their uniqueness in its full strength without comparison is likened to the parable that says “A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Women are a huge light to the world and I anticipate more women taking off their shades that represent various limiting factors and allowing their light to shine for the benefit of all.

Who are some strong women (famous or not) who inspire you in your everyday life? Give them a loving shoutout in case they read this.

I consider myself highly blessed in this regard. I have got both physically and mentally strong women in my corner. I want to appreciate my mother Stella Amajuoyi, my sister Cynthia Amajuoyi, and my beautiful friends: Kemi Adeshakin, Ruth Ndupu, Lulu Okonkwo, and Jasmine Ekumah. You guys are my rock and my blessing, be sure that I remind myself of this fact every single day! I love you!

Any advice for other women out there? Especially those aspiring to pursue a career in the film industry.

Do it afraid. You will be afraid for most of the journey. I look to Jesus for strength and I don’t forget to do it afraid. That’s what I tell myself every day and it has brought me thus far and by God’s grace, it’ll take me even farther.

What progress would you like to see Nollywood make towards gender equality in the coming years?

Honestly, I want us to tell stories of the incomparable strength of women. I want women to be appreciated for their intense and unique strength without bias. That’s the kind of Nollywood I want to be a part of – one where women are given roles and recognition based on their hard work, without hesitation. Above all, I want women to be proud of themselves, we’re awesome! Soon enough, the world will know.

Imagine you’re making a “Strong Women” playlist for International Women’s Month. What’s the first song you’d add, and why?

Girl on fire” by Alicia keys. The song says all I’ve been trying to say. It’s in the lyrics. “Bright shiny, fire-burning design called women!” Lol.

Skinny Girl in Transit broke my heart by taking a long hiatus but I quietly nursed my wounds and moved on. So when they announced this year that they would be releasing season 7, I rolled my eyes, thinking “You people should stop stressing me, I’ve moved on.” But have I, really? Absolutely not! Because immediately episode 1 went live on YouTube, I rushed to watch it.

I have watched Skinny Girl in Transit over the years for a couple of reasons – it’s an easy watch, chill, comedic, filled with drama, and the best part? Romantic. Damn, Mide has my heart. But season 7 has been different so far. Beyond all those reasons, I am seeing, in real-time, how Skinny Girl in Transit is slowly metamorphosing from a cute romantic drama series into one that is not shying away from tough but important conversations. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying SGIT has not been addressing issues – after all, fat-shaming, office bullying and politics, the pressure of marriage, and violence against women are some of the themes that have been explored and addressed before season 7. But this time around, it’s refreshingly different and, *stealing the Gen-Z lingo*, it’s giving. It’s taking unexpected turns and certain laudable character development – I mean, look at Shalewa’s growth – while not veering from the fairytale romance between Mide and Tiwa.

_

When Didi said she didn’t want a baby, I was shocked. Of all the characters in SGIT, never did I think Didi would be the one to say she didn’t want kids. Her affable nature, laughter, and mannerisms all screamed “mother”. When she told Tiwa she loved children but didn’t want any of her own, I thought “Oh, come off it, Didi.” But then, I thought about it for a while – what about Didi gave me the impression that she wanted to be a mother? When did geniality, laughter and joviality become traits of motherhood? And these are the kinds of debates I’ve been having within me since I started watching SGIT season 7. Like asking myself why I thought Derin was simply kidding when she started her search for a sperm donor. Unlike Didi, she is cold, surly, condescending and very aloof; she doesn’t look like an ideal mother. If Derin had said she didn’t want a child, I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid. And if Didi had said she wanted 5 kids, it would have been on brand for her. And that was another bias I had to question – the idea that motherhood looks a certain way or that women who want to be mothers had to be a certain way. There’s a multifacetedness of motherhood and womanhood that is not being talked about enough. I believe it is also beautiful that Derin is looking for a sperm donor. Although she’s gotten to a point where she’s realised she doesn’t want to raise a child all by herself, it is important, in today’s world, to ‘normalise’ having a child how we deem fit, outside the confines of traditional, cultural, and societal norms and expectations. So be it through IVF, surrogacy, sperm donor or whatever legal means, there is no shame in wanting and having a child all by yourself as long as you are capable of taking care of and providing for the child. And, no, I don’t mean only financially; parenthood is far beyond that.

I love how Skinny Girl in Transit is exploring issues of love and relationships too. On one hand, we have young Shalewa who is growing into herself and embracing single life – a major character development from the Shalewa who depended on men for her emotional needs and to help validate her place in this world. Her character shows it’s okay to step back from romantic love to see yourself more clearly. She’s going to therapy, she’s volunteering, she’s working on herself. She’s that girl! And please, Mohammed, I need you to leave her alone.

Then there’s Aunty Dupe who found love – however short – at that age. And Derin… okay, let’s see if Dewunmi is up to any good. But, you know, it’s refreshing to see how people of all ages can find love. We live in a time when so many people are scared of not finding love. Or that it’d be too late before they find their person. But I have always held a strong opinion that love will eventually find us all, 25 or 55. There’s enough love and romance in the world to go round and you’ll find your person. I believe Charles is Aunty Dupe’s person and even though he’s broken up with her, I can’t wait to see how the coming episodes navigate their love story and even explore other themes.

I’ll say I’m loving this season. I’m here for the woke characters, learning, entertainment, checking my biases and questioning my opinion on these matters.

Released in 2023, “Forever and a Day” features a collection of romantic tracks like “911” (a playful song about being completely smitten), “For You” (a heartfelt declaration of love), and the captivating “Monalisa” featuring guest artists like Timi Dakolo, Johnny Drille and Remii.

Victor Thompson – “Fall in Love”

Victor Thompson did not mince words with the 2022 single “Fall In Love.” This sweet and heartfelt message leaves no doubt about his feelings for his wife, Henrietta.

Sinmidele and Remii – “My Baby”

Teaming up for a soulful duet, gospel powerhouse Sinmidele and The Voice alum, Remii, created “My Baby,” a song that beautifully captures the tenderness and joy of being in love.

Yadah – “When a Believer Loves”

In 2023, Yadah went all out with a 2-track EP dedicated to her husband, Okafor Chinonso Daniel. “I really wanted to do songs that talked about love through the lens of scripture. Love as patience, love as kindness, love in its purity. I’m glad I did. The EP “When a Believer Loves” has just 2 songs dedicated to @__okaforchinonso,” she wrote in an Instagram post.

Gaise Baba – “Títíláí”

Bringing an Afro-fusion twist to the love song genre, Gaise Baba dropped “Títíláí” song in 2017 in celebration of love. He says:

“Títíláí” is a song about love within the context of marriage, told from a near-playful angle of a good guy reiterating his endless commitment to his bride. The aim is to draw attention through this, to the institution of marriage; glorify, celebrate and promote the biblical concept of love, grace and ‘forever-ness’.

Angeloh – “Love Child”

In 2023, Angeloh released not just an album, but a celebration of love! “Love Child” is a 7-track that talks about love in its truest form – new love, weddings, romantic getaways – and all the sweetness that comes with it. It has a deluxe version featuring collaborations with other gospel greats like Greatman Takit, Gaise Baba, Ko’rale, and soul singer, Waje. Since 2019, Angeloh has been making love songs inspired by the twists and turns of his love life: from being single to finding the one, getting married, and navigating fatherhood as a young man.

Bonus… Sola Allyson – Ife Eji Owuro

We couldn’t resist including a timeless classic! Sola Allyson‘s “Ife Eji Owuro” (meaning “Morning Love”) is a beautiful and enduring love song that continues to resonate with listeners today. The song “Eji Òwúrò” first appeared in 2003 as part of the soundtrack for a Bimbo Oshin movie of the same name. It was later revamped in 2009 with production by Cobhams Asuquo and mixing by Olaitan Dada of Natialo Productions.

There’s a saying that when someone does exceedingly well, they deserve their praise. Tobi Amusan has a heart full of champion’s spirit and has done exceedingly well. Over and over again, she has proved that she is not just a runner who runs swiftly, but who breaks records – even her own – and scoops medals. We call her the golden girl of 100m hurdles.

Here’s a rundown of her world championships so far:

At just 18, Tobi Amusan announced her arrival on the athletics scene with a double gold medal performance in 2015. She dominated the 100m hurdles at both the African Junior Athletics Championships in Ethiopia and the African Games in the Republic of Congo.

In 2018, Tobi made history as the first Nigerian to win gold in the Commonwealth Games in 100m hurdles at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. She also won a bronze model in the 4x 100m relay with her teammates, Joy Udo-Gabriel, Blessing Okagbare and Rosemary Chukwuma.

Later in the same year, she won her first African Championship at the 2018 Asaba African Championship and a gold medal in the 4 × 100m relay.

In 2019, at her second African Games in Rabat, Morocco, Tobi blazed over the hurdles to win a gold medal in a record of 12.68 seconds.

In the same year, at the 2019 World Championship in Doha, Qatar, Tobi set a personal best in the 100m hurdles heats and semis but finished fourth in the final.

In 2021, she broke a 23-year-old African record by Glory Alozie, clocking 12.42 seconds to become the first Nigerian Diamond League champion at the Zurich Diamond League. This historic feat earned her the coveted diamond trophy and $30,000.00.

In June 2022, Tobi Amusan solidified her reign as the African 100m hurdles champion, retaining her title at the 22nd African Championships in Mauritius with a time of 12.57 seconds. She didn’t stop there, she added another gold in a victorious 4 × 100m relay.

In the same month, she proved her dominance with an amazing top-tier finish, clocking 12.41 seconds at the 2022 Wanda Diamond League in Paris.

The same year in July, in Oregon, Tobi broke the 100m hurdles world record in the World Championships semifinals, becoming Nigeria’s first world record holder in athletics. Though she didn’t claim the legal record in the final, she secured her first World Championship title.

Still, in July, she won the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the Stockholm Diamond League, with an impressive time of 12.52 seconds.

In August, Tobi dominated the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, defending her 100m hurdles title and setting a new record of 12.30 seconds. She also helped the Nigeria team win gold at the women’s 4 × 100 m relay.

In September, she set a new record as the first Nigerian to win the Diamond League title in 12.29 seconds at the Zürich Diamond League final event. What a perfect way to wrap up the year.

2023 was the year that tested Tobi. She started the season strong with 12.34 seconds in the 100m Hurdles at the Silesia Diamond League Meet on July 12. However, she faced a hurdle with a temporary anti-doping suspension, later cleared by the Disciplinary Tribunal.

2024 so far…

On January 5th, Tobi broke the African women’s indoor record in the 60-metre hurdles with a time of 7.75 seconds at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston and in February, she won the women’s 60mH at the Meeting Lievin in France clocking in at 7.77 seconds.

At the ongoing 13th African Games in Ghana, Tobi won a gold medal in the Women’s 100m Hurdles finals. This is Tobi’s third consecutive 100m hurdles gold medal at the African Games. She also won gold in the women’s 4 ×100m relays final.

Eva Ogudu and Personal Care, Research & Development Head, Unilever Africa, Mr. Uchenna Nwakamma, during a press conference for the 2024 Pepsodent World Oral Health Day held at Unilever’s corporate head office in Lagos

In commemoration of the 2024 World Oral Health Day, Pepsodent, one of the prominent global toothpaste brands, has initiated a dental health campaign named “Talk to A Dentist” in collaboration with the Nigerian Dental Association.

The campaign aims to reach 10 million children by 2025, with its launch beginning in schools and communities across Lagos.

Speaking during a press conference to herald the commemoration of the 2024 World Oral Health Day, Marketing Head – Beauty & Well-Being and Personal Care, Unilever Nigeria, Oiza Gyang, expressed the campaign’s motive to promote good oral health hygiene among children, emphasizing Unilever’s commitment to combatting poor oral health care in Nigeria.

Gyang highlighted the link between oral care diseases and absenteeism among school pupils, underlining Pepsodent’s efforts to reverse this trend through targeted initiatives.

Globally, about 3.9 billion people suffer from one oral health condition or the other with tooth decay being the most prevalent oral disease. It has been established that children with poor oral health are more likely to suffer self-confidence and self-esteem issues.

These days, we have since realized that the highest cause of school absenteeism is as a result of oral diseases, she said.

In her welcome remarks, Category Manager, Oral Care at Unilever Nigeria, Eva Ogudu, outlined the campaign’s objectives to achieve zero cavities through consistent twice-daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste like Pepsodent and regular dental check-ups.

She emphasized the initiative’s broader goal of democratizing access to dental care, including free dental camps to eradicate oral diseases. Ogudu reflected on past successes, noting the significant impact of previous campaigns in reaching millions of children and providing essential dental health services to thousands of Nigerians.

She underscored the ongoing collaboration between Pepsodent and the Nigerian Dental Association in advancing oral health education and accessibility nationwide.

Pepsodent’s “Talk to a Dentist” campaign was launched three years ago in collaboration with The Nigerian Dental Association to promote oral health education by sensitizing Nigerians on the importance of visiting a dentist.

In 2022 alone, we were able to reach 1 million children. In 2023, we took the awareness campaign a notch higher as the brand, in collaboration with NDA, reached 2 million children. Besides, we also provided free dental health checks for 50,000 Nigerians.

In addition, we also reached 30 million Nigerians indirectly through the distribution of Pepsodent to various households, Ogudu said.

Also speaking, Head, Corporate Affairs and Sustainable Business, Unilever Nigeria, Godfrey Adejumoh, noted that the ‘Talk to a Dentist’ campaign embarked upon by Pepsodent remains one of the numerous initiatives outlined by Unilever Nigeria to improve people’s health, confidence and well-being.

Adejumoh reiterated the company’s commitment to using its business to become a force for good in society.

On his part, Personal Care, Research & Development Head, Unilever Africa, Uchenna Nwakamma, explained that the Pepsodent brand remains one of the preferred toothpaste for driving oral health care agenda because of its patented formulation.

In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian Dental Association, Dr. Tope Adeyemi, disclosed that about 90% of the world’s population are more likely to suffer from oral diseases in their lifetime.

Adeyemi stated that Nigerians must cultivate low cost preventive practices such as brushing of teeth twice daily with fluoride containing toothpaste, visitation of dentist as well as the adoption of healthy lifestyle to prevent common oral diseases.

While appreciating the longstanding partnership on the ‘Talk To Dentist’ programme, he commended Unilever Nigeria for their steadfast commitment and support towards the actualization of optimum oral health among Nigerians.

The Nigerian Dental Association is also celebrating the World Oral Health Day 2024 in conjunction with Unilever Nigeria by carrying out various oral health promotional activities nationwide.

These oral health promotional activities includes; visits to schools, religious centres and markets; outreaches (free dental check-up, S&P, GIC filings, simple extractions) to various communities; oral health awareness walks, educational programmes; advocacy visits and awareness through the mass media and social media channels etc, he said.

He urged the Federal Government to integrate oral health services into the primary health centres stating that doing so will reduce the burden of common preventable oral diseases as well as save costs for dental expenditure.

Currently, oral care services are mostly accessed as a secondary level of care in the NHIA. The NDA calls for preventive oral care services such as scaling and polishing of teeth, fluoride therapy, simple dental fillings, dentures and simple tooth extraction to be included in primary care of the NHIA, he added.

Lamenting the limited access to oral health care services in Nigeria especially in the rural areas, he stated that it was unfortunate that dentist to population ratio currently stands at 1:53,828 as against the recommended ratio of 1:5,000.

Also speaking, the Director of the Dentistry Division at the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Gloria Uzoigwe, acknowledged the government’s efforts to improve oral health policy, emphasizing ongoing initiatives to integrate oral health into primary healthcare.

She commended Unilever for its contribution to oral health awareness and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to dental care for all Nigerians.

Pepsodent’s “Talk to A Dentist” campaign signifies a collective effort to promote oral health awareness and accessibility, fostering brighter smiles and healthier futures for children across Nigeria.

Sometimes last year, I interviewed a candidate for an urgent vacancy. I had shortlisted her based on her work experience and qualifications, and I intended to find out more about her during the interview. When I spoke with her on the phone before the interview date, she sounded so confident and very well-spoken.

On the day of the virtual interview, I was so excited to chat with her but all my high hopes were crashed just under a few minutes. Why? What happened? I wasn’t impressed due to her nervousness. She kept mixing up her words and breathing heavily, making concentrating on her answers difficult. I knew she was anxious, and for me to get the best out of her, I had to tweak things. I paused the interview and said to her: “Hey. I want you to please be free with me. I don’t eat or bite, I just want to get to know you better. I want you to see me as a friend, okay? I know you are very nervous right now, but I need you to understand that you were shortlisted for this position because you are qualified for it, okay? So begin to see yourself as that.”

I asked her to exhale three times after the pep talk, and we started the interview all over. This time around, it was so good. She answered all the questions confidently and thanked me profusely for not giving up on her. Another recruiter might have dismissed her for being incompetent, thereby losing out on a great talent. But I decided not to give up on her, and she, likewise, didn’t disappoint.

As a talent acquisition specialist, it is important to be more humane in that position and there are the top three qualities one must imbibe.

The first one is empathy. As an HR professional or recruiter, it’s important to possess the trait of understanding and empathy towards your team or candidates. During interviews, candidates may feel nervous, so it’s your responsibility to ease their anxiety and make them feel comfortable. Building a rapport with them can help them feel more relaxed. To embody this trait, think back to when you were job-hunting and wished to be treated well by recruiters. By being empathetic, you can bring out the best in your candidates.

The second is patience. As a recruiter, it is essential to practice patience because you will come across candidates from various backgrounds and personalities. Some candidates may appear frustrating, slow or friendly, but you should not let their attitudes affect your ability to identify top talent. It is crucial to remain composed and ask relevant questions required for the position you are hiring for. Take your time to select candidates with the right skills and expertise who can be trained to improve their weaknesses. Remember to prioritize quality over the candidate’s personality or behaviour during the hiring process.

The third quality is emotional intelligence. As an HR professional, it is crucial to exhibit a non-negotiable attribute of intentionally making decisions without being solely influenced by emotions or making hasty judgments. This will help you avoid the trap of the Halo and Horn effect that most recruiters usually struggle with due to implicit prejudices. The Halo effect leads to focusing on just one skill that a candidate possesses and wrongly assuming that they will be equally good at other areas, which can lead to missing out on red flags and ultimately resulting in a bad hire. Similarly, the Horn effect makes you concentrate on one negative feature in a candidate and mentally disqualify them concerning other aspects. Therefore, it’s important to ensure you do not let emotions sway your decisions easily, and instead, try to be logical to make the best choices for the company.

HR Professionals should always strive to spread love and kindness wherever they go. It’s important to avoid acting like a mini-god and speaking to candidates condescendingly. Instead, we should aim to reassure them and make them feel comfortable, especially when they start to feel nervous. Your relationship with candidates is crucial in bringing out the best in them. Providing an amazing candidate experience can greatly contribute to your firm’s employer branding, as you are an extension of the company you work for.

Last week the internet raved over a new sound and talent that seemingly just arrived on the block. Desmond Momoh popularly known as “The Majeek”, released his first single of 2024, titled; “The Moon”.

This single represents a shift from the norm in the Nigerian music scene, as “The Majeek” gives Nigerian music lovers a taste of something different with his blend of Reggae, Dancehall & Afrobeats.

As fans and music lovers continue to embrace this new sound, one might be forgiven for thinking that “The Majeek” only just began his foray into music in 2024. However, his career began over a decade ago in Benin City, when “The Majeek” initially started as a music producer and rose to acclaim for his production credits on songs like ‘Peperempe’ by Klever Jay ft May D, ‘Gladiator’ by Sleezy E ft J Martins and for co-producing ‘E Ku Si Go’ for J. Martins.

The Majeek’s career as an artist really began to kick off in 2021. His single, Cool Me Down was so well received at the time it garnered “The Majeek” some recognition from the powers that be. He later got a cosign from Boomplay as they made him the spotlight artist of their ‘New Kid On The Block’ playlist.

His consistency & growth as an artist became more recognizable to industry insiders. His smooth blend of lyrical prowess with an RnB/Dancehall flavor and vocal versatility, gained him the opportunity to open for one of the top Afrobeat acts, Patoranking at The Big-Name Concert in Lagos and TPE II in Nigeria’s capital Abuja. This was all topped off, when “The Majeek” announced the release of his debut EP titled; “Pressure” in 2023.

This 6-track body of work packed a punch with different genres from Afrobeat to RnB and Dancehall that showed off The Majeek’s talent and versatility. The themes for the EP cut across passion, dominance, and consistency infused with his experience of the rollercoaster called life, seen through his lenses.

Again, this was warmly received by industry insiders, as well as The Majeek’s burgeoning fan base. His reward? “The Majeek”received a recording contract from Sony Music West-Africa at the tail end of 2023, making him one of the artists to look out for this year.

From all indicators, “The Majeek” represents a voice for a new sound crop within a fresh generation.

In life, everything happens for a reason. Daniel didn’t know that his transfer to a new college would come with the most beautiful gift ever, Ehinome.

Well, cupid was certainly plotting something sweet behind the scenes and the first time he set eyes on her, he knew she was the one for him. They’ve spent the past years growing deeper in love with each passing day and now we can hear the jolly sound of wedding bells!

Daniel went down on one knee, asking Ehinome to marry him and she said ‘Yes!’ Their indoor proposal was perfect and they had an engagement party to celebrate this new beginning with their loved ones. We can sure feel the love and happiness in the air and we are super pumped that love found these two! 😍

Enjoy their proposal photos and love story below:

How we met
By the bride, Ehinome:

In Daniel, I found someone who complements me in every way. His unwavering love, support, and admiration for me are evident in his words and actions. Over the past ten years, we’ve built a strong foundation of trust, understanding, and companionship, weathering life’s storms together and celebrating its joys as a team. I’m so excited to spend the rest of my life with my man because I couldn’t imagine a future without him. His love fills my heart with warmth and happiness, and together, I believe we will conquer anything life throws our way. Daniel, I can’t wait to spend a lifetime of love, laughter, and adventure with you.

How we met
By the groom, Daniel:

On the day I proposed to Ehinome, I found myself overwhelmed by her beauty. I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared over the past 8 years. From the moment I first laid eyes on Ehinome in college, I knew she was the one. It was as if destiny had brought us together, guiding me through school transfers and chance encounters until our paths finally crossed. Our college days were filled with adventures and countless hours spent together, but our journey didn’t end there.

We have leaned on each other as we embarked on our adult lives. Ehinome has always been there to encourage, motivate, and pray for me. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering strength have been a constant source of inspiration. As we’ve navigated life’s ups and downs together, we’ve created countless memories and overcome countless obstacles. Ehinome is my soulmate and my best friend. As we embark on this new chapter together, I know that our love will only continue to grow stronger with each passing day. Here’s to a lifetime of adventures, laughter, and love. Ehinome, I can’t wait to spend forever with you.

Ehinome and David also had an engagement party. Here’s how it went 😍

In “Wura,” a Showmax Nigeria original drama series, Martha Ehinome plays Tumininu “Tumi” Kuti, a defiant daughter who stands against all odds in the face of adversity. She stars alongside Yomi Fash Lanso, Carol King, Scalert Gomez, Ego Iheancho, and Ropo Ewenla.

Martha Ehinome wears many creative hats. She is a trained actor from the Department of Theatre Arts, at the University of Ibadan, majoring in acting and speech. Aside from acting, she enjoys photography, singing and exploring new places. She was also in Africa Magic’s telenovela “Riona” as ‘Esanjumi’ and in “Dear Bayo” for which she received two BON (Best of Nollywood) award nominations.

For International Women’s Month, she talks about her role in “Wura” – a series about the secret lives of Wura Amoo-Adeleke, a ruthless iron lady – in an exclusive interview with BellaNaija. She also talks about the women who inspire her and her perspective on the significance of International Women’s Month.

***

Hi Martha! What were you up to on International Women’s Day?

This may probably be a disappointing reply, but I was indoors all day.

It was very nice seeing the celebration of women on my timeline though; women lifting each other and putting out a lot of positivity.

You play the role of Tumi in “Wura.” Let’s talk about her. What are the qualities you admire about her?

From the start of the series, we see her in a situation where she inherits so much responsibility. She has a very determined mind. She works hard and holds her head high wherever she is, irrespective of her social status. She exudes strength and integrity and that’s very admirable.

The theme of International Women’s Day is Investing in Women: Accelerate Progress. It’s about supporting women to reach their full potential. What does that mean to you?

Thankfully, some women are achieving great things despite the limitations placed on women. Unfortunately, not all women are fortunate enough to have those stories. There are stereotypes and narratives that have put too many women in boxes, limiting them.

The theme of this year ‘Investing in Women’ is basically removing roadblocks, pouring into them, supporting them to reach their full potential, and giving them room to bloom.

Who are some strong women (famous or not) who inspire you in your everyday life? Give them a loving shoutout in case they read this

I’ll start with women who every day, are fighting whatever system it is that’s trying to hold them down; whether it is in their workplaces, their families or out on the streets. Those women are my heroes.

More pointedly, Jade Osiberu is a woman I absolutely respect for the quality of her work and all that she has put in in the course of her journey. I have also come to deeply admire Issa Rae for her courage in doing things for herself whether or not the world was ready to give her a platform.

Any advice for other women out there? Especially those aspiring to pursue a career in the film industry

My advice would be to come prepared. Not necessarily because they’re female but because it takes hard work, perseverance, consistency, and great love for the craft to really hang around. It’s not all glitz and glam.

That being said, I will also enthusiastically urge them to come. There is always space for creativity and newness in any industry.

Did anything special happen while filming “Wura” that made you feel even more powerful as an actress, especially when bringing Tumi’s journey to life?

Tumi went through a very wide range of emotions as so many things happened to her through her journey in the series. It’s the widest scope of emotions I have ever had to play with a singular character, so that was fun.

I’m happy I was able to pour so much into her and be true to who she was as much as I could. So, yes, I believe it further sharpened my skills and enriched me more as an actor.

What progress would you like to see Nollywood make towards gender equality in the coming years?

I would like to see more stories correcting biases around women’s realities. We have that power as artists, and it must be aggressively used to shift people’s mindsets and better society.

TikTok

Last week, the internet was down in Nigeria and some parts of Africa due to extensive damage to MainOne‘s submarine cable system, a major internet provider to Nigerian banks and internet providers such as MTN, Airtel and others. The outage affected businesses, trades and remote workers. People could not access their banking apps, they could not order food and groceries, and streaming platforms did not work. Businesses were stuck, trades were on pause, and remote workers were left high and dry. It was a tough time all around.

However, some social networks were accessible. Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp were working and those using wifis like Starlink were not affected. So even though the internet was majorly down, we could still find a way to communicate with our mutuals. But imagine a situation where there was no internet for a week; you’re just holding your phone and the only thing you can do with it is use the flashlight or call. You have no access to WhatsApp, Netflix, Twitter, Instagram, websites or anything at all, what do you think will happen?

We asked a few BellaNaijarians what they would do with their life if there was no internet for a week and some of their responses are quite nourishing. Check out their responses:

Oluwadunsin

Oh, there are several things I can do without the internet. I’ll pay better attention to my community – friends and family. Occasionally, I’ll invite them to my home for dinner or visit them. We’ll play lots of games and eat snacks. I’ll read more. Before I started using a smartphone, I was an avid reader. Without the internet, I’ll nurture that part of me again. Reading and reading more, arguing about book characters with my sister, and imagining the many ways I’d have ended the book if I had written it. Haha. I’ll also write more. I might even go back to writing with a pen and paper instead of typing on a laptop. For me, the possibilities are endless and I don’t think I’ll miss not having internet. Unfortunately, I doubt it’d ever happen. I wish it would though, it’d be great to find my way back to life before the social media apps I use now.

To answer your question, a week is too short. Make it a month or two, or three. Haha

Kwubei

I will sleep a lot. I will also read all the novels I have been meaning to read. Then I’ll plot my next move because I will practically be jobless.

Ahmad

It’s interesting because now that I think about it, we have so gotten used to the internet that everything we do is tied to it. Well, since it’s just for a week, I will sleep more than usual. I would have said I’d start finding another means to earn money but how do I apply without the internet? I will also read and try to refurbish my creativity. But the whole week will pretty much be spent sleeping, haha.

Layomi

Life without the internet would actually slap so hard. Personally, I feel we have made ourselves disillusioned to believe that without certain apps, we would not survive. This takes me back to my NYSC year — three weeks in camp in another city. I went with an open mindset, leaving my phone every day at the ‘mami market’ to charge until nighttime, so I spent my days interacting and talking to people. It was fun!

So, first off, the only thing I would miss would be my bank apps because I have subconsciously adopted the cashless policy. So, I think I have to start having reasonable cash around me now. I love watching the TV and before the Showmax, Prime, and Netflix revolution, I watched a ton of DSTV, so I’ll keep doing that. Every weekend and some weekdays, there are live sports to watch, so I’m good. Life happens a lot and more outside of the internet and we need to remember that.

Damilola

This is a tough one. I will do a full subscription plan on my GOtv. I love cartoons, so Cartoon Network will be my major channel. Visit my family and friends close by. I will use the bus since there won’t be Bolt or Uber, cook what I can cook, place an order for things I can’t cook and sleep. I have some books on my phone that I haven’t read, so I’d read them. I think this will help me survive for a week. It will make me miserable but I will sha survive and make the best out of it.5;’?

Funmilola

I don’t think I will run short of what to do. Since it’s for a week, I’ll have my parents over for dinner a couple of times, we’ll have lively and funny conversations, play games (Ludo, Scrabble, Ayo and Cards), and then dance to Sunny Ade afterwards. I’ll do a lot of reading, starting with the essays I have downloaded on my phone and then the books on the shelf that have just been staring at me for a long time. I’ll write some personal essays too. Maybe this is when I sign up for driving lessons or swimming lessons. In between all of these sha, I’ll mostly be sleeping, making plenty of calls with friends and family and talking for long hours.

Motivation is a crucial factor that leads to consistency, which in turn drives increased efficiency in achieving results. However, it is not always easy to identify what motivates us, especially when we feel stuck or stagnant. Often, we mistake a lack of motivation for laziness, lack of willingness, incapability, or inability. But in reality, many underlying factors can affect our motivation, such as life events that can weaken our mental resilience over time. Life can be challenging, and it has its ups and downs. Sometimes, things may not go as planned, but it is essential to remember that life happens for us and not to us. To keep going, we need to make a conscious choice to choose to renew our hope each day. This way, no matter how tough things get, we can always draw from a pool of fresh hope. Motivation needs to come from within first before it can manifest externally. We need to make up our minds not to give up on our goals, whether it is our career aspirations, family or love life, friendships, or other pursuits. Once we make up our minds, we become more receptive to people, places, or things that can motivate us along the way.

I recently noticed a strange behaviour in myself. I have faced many challenges in life and have not been able to achieve the independence and freedom I have longed for. As a result, I have felt trapped in a vicious cycle of routine. Even though my routine is not unhealthy, it has been draining to repeat the same things over and over again. I gave up on life, and on my ability to move forward regardless of my achievements or lack thereof. I have been lacking motivation, but still exist. I realized I had given up when someone called me “lazy” even though I am usually a go-getter. It was time for me to re-evaluate my complacency and find its root cause. I am not lazy, but rather unmotivated to do things I used to enjoy. I gave up, but now I must find a way to reignite my passion and motivation.

This is what lack of motivation does to you. It can gradually drain the happiness and energy out of you, leaving you lacking the confidence to succeed and the strength to push forward. This is what is known as learned helplessness, a psychological state where we expect the worst outcome from any situation due to our past negative experiences. This feeling can be a significant obstacle to motivation and can leave us feeling paralysed and unable to make positive choices. However, it is possible to overcome learned helplessness through various psychological techniques like practising self-awareness, staying present in the moment, and seeking therapy. By doing this, we can break free from the chains of learned helplessness and start making healthier choices without feeling so attached to the outcome. Instead, we can learn to be more resilient and use our past negative experiences as a springboard for growth. Inaction, on the other hand, is equally detrimental to motivation. It leaves us feeling drained with only thoughts and mental images, without any positive materialisation. This not only wastes our time but also occupies the part of our brain that should be fueling our motivation for action.

Motivation is necessary, especially during these challenging times. The economy is worsening with the cost of living increasing almost daily. Bad governance triggers anxiety and leaves citizens restless. The impoverished are losing hope while the rich are becoming cautious, and the middle class is struggling to maintain their balance. This is the right time to motivate yourself to keep going and endure, despite the current situation. Taking action is crucial to counteract a lack of motivation. You must act to gain motivation and create actionable plans. When you make plans and stick to them, you’ll gain the motivation you need to carry on and hopefully achieve your desired outcomes. Initially, I did not plan to write on this topic, but once I started and finished, I realised the importance of arresting the negative thoughts that can keep you from moving forward. Once you do that, you’ll be ready to make progress.

For so long – as long as the impact of music has been felt – music has been a source of motivation for listeners. Think about how you feel when you listen to Asake‘s “Sunshine,” which urges you not to lose hope. Through his lyrics, he emphasises the importance of perseverance and hard work, drawing parallels to the success of figures like Dangote. He reminds us that even amidst challenges – if you push and pursue your dreams – there’s light at the end of the tunnel. “Sun gon shine on everything you do,” he says.

If you procrastinate, this song could be the wake-up call you need to take action. It’s the same way you feel when you listen to Asa’sDreamer Girl,” but we’ll save that for later.

For International Women’s Month, we turn to the songs made for women that we are jamming to. What is Women’s Month without music? These are the songs that encourage women to aspire for greatness, songs that are in no way limiting, the ones that don’t slut shame them but tell of their worth as human beings, deserving respect and dignity.

Here are our top five empowering songs for women below:

Woman” by Simi

In “Woman,” Simi takes the bull by the horns to address the institutional barriers placed on women and the unfair stereotypes they face. If the woman is unmarried and doesn’t have children, she is bound to suffer Simi explains.

“I never talk finish,” She just got started. Is there an end to the stigmas women face? Every day the art of submission is hammered into their ears, but no attention is paid to the intimidation they suffer. If she’s confident in herself, that’s not good. If she’s doing well financially, the source of the money is questioned. And as if that’s not enough, women are still being relegated in society.

What more can we say to Simi about this song other than to express our gratitude for her conscious effort to bring light to the concerns and fears faced by women in Nigeria?

Rara” by Waje

This is the song you listen to when you are all glammed up and pumped up. Hair. Done. Nails. Done. Face. On sleek. The outfit? Superb. Attitude? Right on point. This is your time to shine, no one can stop you, not even yourself.

Even in situations like being nervous about that interview, the first date or when you’re feeling down just put the song on, face the mirror and do a little dance. Ensure it’s on speaker for maximum effect and ginger. Nothing can stop your sweet.

Listen to “Rara”

Dreamer Girl” by Asa

It’s not a crime to dream too much. To dream about the future, the many things you could achieve and the many places you can go – as far as your dreams take you. The possibilities are endless. Even when you’re faced with doubts, Asa tells you not to let go of your visions, to dream and hope for your future.

In “Dreamer Girl,” Asa is telling women that their dreams are valid and achievable. Life is full of possibilities. Don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams.

“Baby baby, close your eyes, life’s a dream, maybe someday one day…”

Wonder Woman” by Davido

If Davido’s dedication to his woman is serious, then it’s a reminder that you shouldn’t joke with yourself too. “Wonder Woman” is all about the women who are keeping it real, and Davido is not shy to celebrate them, even if it means emptying his bank account.

The music video has a diverse cast of emerging female leaders excelling in their respective fields, navigating a male-dominated world with grace. Watch the video below and get your dose of inspiration.

Loaded” by Tiwa Savage and Asake

When Tiwa Savage’s sex tape was leaked, it was no surprise that she faced a lot of backlash from society. Names were hurled at her and one would think it’s taboo for a woman to have sex. Rather than focusing on the criminal act of leaking a private video, she became the target of criticism, highlighting the societal taboo surrounding female sexuality.

In a society that’s always so quick to shame women at the slightest, quick to ruin their reputations and offer no grace to them, Tiwa proved that a leaked sex tape is not enough to bring her down. She rose above all the noise and in “Loaded” featuring Asake, she asserted her identity as a music star.

What’s the lesson? Don’t allow society to dictate your worth or response to adversity.

A month where one's life tragedy could be prevented.

]]>

I stand by the window and watch as dogs roam through the compound of my house. Behind me, a plate of eba and ewedu soup sits on the floor, begging to be swallowed. Before I started praying, I gulped a bottle of water to fill my stomach and that seems to be why I have lost the appetite for Sahur but it is not; I have just finished reading Zaina Arafat‘s essay, “Fast for Ramadan While Gaza Goes Hungry,” where she gives a narration of her childhood memory of how Ramadan used to be for her and her family in Palestine. It has become my morning routine since Ramadan started to read something before heading to the mosque for the morning prayer. Before I started reading the essay, I placed the Qur’an on the cabinet after completing a Juz’ and instead of eating right away, my phone pings, a notification from Instagram and from one follower’s story, I encountered Zaina Arafat’s essay. I should have eaten before reading the essay.

Ramadan has not always been reflective for me. I grew up understanding the month as just a ritual to be observed, otherwise you would be denied two pieces of meat or taking pap with milk during iftar. But when I moved to Ilorin for my English degree, it became a ladder to reach God: I prayed hard for good grades; to get my pitches commissioned; to land a good-paying job after school. Last year, the holy month morphed to become some sort of life straightener – I tried completing the Qur’an, prayed harder and became more charitable. I used last year’s to pray for a better life but I have been struggling to find a course for this year’s. And reading Zaina’s essay revealed why. Although I have been avoiding interactions about the tragedy in Gaza for many months, the thought of eating healthy while children and other Muslims starve away in Gaza never leaves my mind. It engrosses me.

Hunger is a world problem but there is a difference between hunger caused by financial incapability and one forced on you. Ramadan is meant to be a month of bounty and soul nourishment – spiritually or nutrient-wise – but there are children in Gaza who, as Zaina reiterates, will never get to have a childhood memory of Ramadan. Their parents will never have the chance to create the memories for them. When I was young, my mother used to enjoy cooking more during Ramadan because that was the only time she got to watch her children – all gathered around – eat. Last week, she called to ask if I’d need anything from her for Ramadan and I told her I would be fine. She said, “Koburu,” and there was a tinge of bitterness and longing in her voice. I know she misses her Ramadan routine and she’s feeling lonelier. Most of her children have left home; my brothers and I live in various places, distant from her. The last time she saw us together was when we lost one of our sisters to child labour.

But I don’t find myself thinking about my mother’s loneliness during Ramadan. I rather now spend many hours scrolling through Al Jazeera’s Instagram page, watching the videos of horror in Gaza as children, mothers and fathers struggle to survive. Ramadan is meant to be a month that dissipates your fears and worries, a month where one’s life tragedy could be prevented. But families in Gaza are being bombed, and many connections are shattered. At least 31,819 people have been killed and 73,934 wounded by attacks in Gaza since October 7, according to the latest figures shared by the Health Ministry. The statement added that 93 people were killed and 142 wounded in the past 24 hours including children, according to Al Jazeera’s live broadcast.

In hospitals, starvation is drying up mothers’ breasts and babies, innocent souls are bearing the brunt of a war they did not start. I read reports of Palestinians preparing for Ramadan and imagined them praying to God to use the holy month to end their misery, instead of praying for the blessings of the world and hereafter, like other Muslims around the world.

My eating habits became worse in this holy month. On the third day of Ramadan, like today, I drank just water for sahur. For its iftar, I took a less-sugared custard. It is not my inability to cook or eat better, but how does one eat well when somewhere, people who are meant to experience the same joy and excitement of the month, experience misery? What kind of Ramadan memory would the children have? When will this end?

Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to fall in love with someone by just seeing a photo of them? We bet if Abdullahi were to answer, it would be a resounding yes! 😍

The first time he came across Amirah’s photo, there was something about her that caught his full attention. Fortunately for him, they had a mutual friend who succeeded in securing him a date with the beautiful Amirah. They built a beautiful bond which has now led them to the start of a perfect fairytale. They are serving us premium sweetness today with their pre-wedding photos and we cannot get enough! They look perfect together and we are excited for them as they embark on this forever journey.

Enjoy their pre-wedding shoot and love story below:

How we met
By the bride, Amirah:

Abdullahi was scrolling through social media with a female friend and they stumbled upon my picture. The friend told him I was pretty and looked like his type but that I was also out of his league. He refused to accept this and went ahead to search for my handle on Instagram. He went through my pictures and discovered that we had a mutual friend, Sanusi. He walked over to Sanusi’s house in Manchester and spoke to him about me. The funny thing is that Sanusi had asked me a few days earlier when I wanted to get married as he was going to look for a husband for me.

Just after a few days, he sent me a message saying he had found a husband for me. I didn’t think he was serious of course. He kept insisting that we would get along with the ‘husband’ he had found because we had a lot in common. Well, Abdullahi and I finally met when he came for the summer holidays in London, in June 2019. I was also starting university that September. We started dating one month later and the rest is history. I am super excited to be doing life with the perfect man.
